Daily Bloggings 6/4/10

Tidbits:

The blown call by Jim Joyce Wednesday night in the near perfect game by Tiger's pitcher Armando Galarraga was atrocious. But the forgiving reaction by the Detroit pitcher and the emotional meeting at home plate between them the following day was pretty special. To err is human....

I just put an HDMI cable on my HDTV and the results are incredible!

Won't rush to judgment on Joren van der Sloot, but this is too much of a coincidence. If you were a lawyer would YOU represent this guy?

How good is Kobe Bryant?

Try the new pretzel cheesesteak at the Philly Soft Pretzel Factory....delicious!

Peace.....

  1. Ken,

I thought the Jim Joyce blown call and both his reaction and the reaction of the young pitcher Armando Galarraga were impressive. Nobody understands human error better than the pro athlete. Replay Joyce's mistake - think about where he was standing - 15 yards past first base on the line. - the base itself is raised what about 3 to 4 inches - the umpire is say 6 ft tall - so he is looking down - it's possible that the base was blocking the umpires vision of the runners foot, making it look like his foot had touched base, but in fact it was in line with the base but not touching the base. If we knew the exact dimensions I am betting we could recreate the situation and Jim Joyce mistake was explainable. The replays that you and I saw and the one Jim saw in the replay in the club house where taken from the side so we could see both the runner’s foot and the base.

Try and accurately make the call where in an instant where Jim Joyce had to make it and I think we would find that many people would have made the same mistake.

I think in graduate school at some point in time we tried to solve these kind of problems using trig formulas. or something like it was almost 45 years ago.
