I'm in love.

I've got a serious crush on Peppy Miller, I'm smitten with George Valentin, and I'm head over heels for The Artist, a Harvey Weinstein film directed by Michel Hazanavicius.

French actor George Dujardin is Valentin, a silent film heartthrob who is the toast of Hollywood in 1927. He has a random meeting with Berenice Bejo (the wife of director Hanavicius in real life), a young actress trying to break into the biz. Their mutual attraction makes the screen sizzle, but Valentin is stuck in an unhappy marriage, with only his dog Uggy there to lend support.

The crash of '29 puts and the advent of "talkies" which studio executive Al Zimmer (John Goodman) decides is the future of film, puts Valentin's career in a tailspin. His fall from grace is mirrored by Peppy Miller's rising popularity. Valentin pours his own money into one final, ego driven attempt to prove the film world wrong--and loses everything.

I won't give away anymore details, but I will warn you that The Artist is MOSTLY silent, with a delightful and audible surprise at the end that makes the entire story make sense. It's subtle, but evident.

A strong supporting cast including James Cromwell and Penelope Ann Miller add to the fun.

So, it is indeed true that silence is golden. Especially when it comes to the Artist and the Golden Age of Hollywood.

This a film to put on your "must see" list. But shhhhh...do it quietly.

You spent your life doing things the right way, and you would up being blindsided by fate.

A rush to judgment has clouded the memory of your illustrious career. But your legacy will show wins, championships, and molding men of character--year after year---generation after generation.

You reported an indiscretion to your superiors--acts so reprehensible you couldn't even fathom

what you were being told. But they vilified you for not doing enough--and then fired you with a phone call in the middle of the night.

We have lost a national hero. Let history judge who he was and what he stood for.

Eagles Epitaph 2011

The final outrage of the 2011 Eagles football season was today's Andy Reid post game press conference.

His glib attempt at humor and evasive nature was never more evident.

When asked if he WANTED to be here next season, he wouldn't respond either way--stating only he hadn't "thought" about it yet.

A reporter then asked him why this Eagle's (dream team) wasn't a playoff team. His smirking reply was that they were 8-8, and the other teams had better records. Where was the follow up here?....why does the media constantly let him off the hook without a follow up?

I want to see conviction. I want to see disappointment and outrage that his regime has not delivered a Super Bowl championship in 13 years.

I don't need clever repartee'...I can get that on Saturday Night Live.

Thoughts....

Say what you must...but Joe Paterno doesn't deserve to go out this way. And wasn't the Big 10 a little premature in taking his name off the championship trophy? The guy hasn't even had a chance to comment yet.

Brian Billick is a terrible color analyst for Fox TV. He makes the same points all game long and his language is garbled.

Indian Summer is sublime.....just don't get used to it. The blast of the hawk wind and chill of winter is right around the corner.

NFL players don't go the extra mile. Too many are worried about their next contract. Case in point Eagles WR Steve Smith falling down 1 yard short of a crucial first down.

Does anyone really miss the NBA?

Crying Shame

I have no allegiance to Penn State.

I've been there only once, and did witness the incredible specatacle of a Nittany Lion football game with 100,000 plus all dressed in white in a foamy fervor supporting their team.

The face of that team, the town, and the University is Joe Paterno. But it goes much deeper that that. He was the beating heart, the blood, and the oxygen that made Happy Valley what it is, and kept it hale and alive.

Joe Paterno announced his retirement today, amidst a scandle that has not only put the world of college sports on it's ear, but has kicked all that admired what was once clean and pure smack in the teeth.

He reported what he saw to his boss, but said no more. He apparantly let his perverted lieutanant continue to have the run of the ship, even though he was no longer officially part of the PSU brass.

Coach Joe Paterno spent a career doing things the right way.....with one exception.

And now his glorious legacy is forever tarnished.

I guess even the best of fairy tales sometimes have inglorious endings.

Mighty Macs Mighty Good

I attended the world premier of the Tim Chambers film The Mighty Macs last night at the Kimmell Center in Philadelphia.

My suggestion is that you lace up your sneakers, load up on some hankies, and make a wind sprint down to your local theater on October 21st to see this groundbreaking film that chronicles the amazing story of tiny Immaculata College winning the 1972 NCAA Women's basketball championship.

This film stars Carla Cuggino as Cathy Rush, David Boreanaz as her husband (and former NBA referee) Ed Rush, and Ellen Burstyn as Mother Superior and takes you on a delightful journey back in time to the psychedelic days the early 70's when women's sports were hardly a blip on the radar screen. Cuggino, who plays a role similar to Gene Hackman in the epic hoops film Hoosiers, does an amazing job of capturing the frustration and passion that went along with the unenviable task of taking a cash strapped program with no facilities and turning it into a champion.

Chambers captures the essence of the emotion with his fast paced action and timely edits. The score (London Philharmonic) along with hits from the 70's provide an enjoyable backdrop to the G-rated action that any father would be comfortable taking his little girl to see.

Chambers has taken a stand and is taking on Hollywood to help bring the "family" back to family entertainment.

And to me...that's a slam dunk.

Here is my theory. You tell me if it is plausible.

President Barack Obama is sinking like a stone. He announces he will not run for a second term which opens the door for Hillary Clinton. Forget Joe Biden...no how, no way he gets the nomination.

The Republicans, partially in response to this panic move, give the nomination to Herman Cain (an increasingly impressive choice, I might add).

A long shot? Just remember, you heard it here first.

One Of A Kind

Some people are just larger than life....and Al Davis was absolutely one of those people.

During his storied NFL football career, Al Davis held the positions of assistant coach, head coach, GM, owner, and league commissioner of the AFL. If there was a more qualified individual in his field of endeavor, or one who was more passionate and dedicated to his company or team, I would certainly like to meet him or her.

I had two brief encounters with Al Davis. The first was pregame at the 1980 Super Bowl. I noticed him a distance milling around the field pregame. Whirling with constant motion and enthusiasm, his hands were clapping with such great intensity I felt like offering him a pair of receivers gloves to save the skin on his palms. Entering that game, I was sure my Philadelphia Eagles were going to win, but after witnessing Davis and his demeanor prior to the game, I wasn't so sure. Unfortunately for us, my premonition was correct.

Many years later my ex-Stars teammate Chuck Fusina and I were the guests of Dick Vermeil and Carl Peterson for a Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders game at Arrowhead Stadium. While taking a tour of the press box and suites, a moody and tempermental Al Davis passed us in the hallway while being wheeled to his private box in a wheelchair. Davis was barking at his handlers, the Chiefs staff, and pretty much anyone within earshot. You see Al Davis wanted it his way, and for him there was no other way.

He was also a man of courage and conviction. Most people don't know that although he was the AFL commissioner in the late 60's when the leagues merged, he was AGAINST the merger because he felt eventually the AFL would be a superior league. And when the struggling USFL took on the NFL with their anti-trust lawsuit in 1986, Al Davis actually testified FOR the USFL. Davis loved backing the underdog, and standing up for what he believed regardless of the circumstances. For him, it was as clear as black and white.....OK, we'll fudge a little bit here and say black and silver. Regardless of the color scheme, right was right and politics be damned in his eyes.

So Al Davis now resides with George Halas, Vince Lombardi, and the other icons who helped make the NFL the mega giant it is today. And Raider Nation has lost it's leader and face of the franchise.

Let's hope whomever steps up and replaces him can (just) win, baby. It's what Al Davis would have wanted.

A Sunday to Remember

I usually wake up early on the first NFL Sunday of the year and get some coffee, read the sports page, and prepare for all day action starting at 1pm.

But this opening Sunday was much different.

My day started with reflection of that fateful day 10 years past. It started with a tolling bell asking for a moment of silence....with a tearful roll call of thousands of names forever lost to the lunacy of 19 men crashing planes into buildings that are our symbols of freedom and democracy.

They didn't know their acts would only strengthen our resolve to be tougher, better, and protect freedom with more fervor than ever before.

There was plenty of brave action on the football field today. But it paled in comparison to the remembrances of bravery shown by the passengers of Flight 93, and by the rescue workers that ventured into a towering inferno and the Pentagon to save their brothers and sisters in danger.

So I respectfully end my selfish football pleasure today by saying my own thank you to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

You are the true heroes......those on the gridiron are merely pretending.

Just watched the HBO documentary on baseball pioneer Curt Flood. It's an enigmatic tale of a talented, complicated, and tragic individual. I highly recommend it. (Nobody does sports documentaries as well as HBO.)

Speaking of baseball.....since when is it MANDATORY to take a set up man out (Sean Marshall of the Cubs) who just set the Marlins down in order in the eighth preserving a 2-0 lead to put in their CLOSER (The newest version of the Wild Thing Carlos Marmol) who walks the bases loaded and then gives up a bases clearing double without retiring a batter. Sometimes situational baseball lacks common sense.

Also lacking common sense was the Casey Anthony verdict.....but like OJ Simpson water has a tendency to find it's own level. Karma can be a bitch sometimes.

James R. Dunek (with my wife Terri in Tampa, Florida in 1984 for the USFL Championship Game).

Born in Chicago, Illinois on July 14, 1934. He will be 77 years of age in a couple of weeks.

In between Father's Day and his birthday, I thought I would write a little tribute to the man who taught me so much, and to whom I owe everything.

Dad is a survivor.

A high school drop out, he maneuvered his way around the streets of Chicago is a savvy way....once scaling the fence to get into Wrigley Field to watch his beloved Cubs, because he didn't have the 15 or 25 cents for a bleacher seat. And speaking of surviving, he beat colon cancer and a triple bypass operation that all occurred within 2 years of each other when he was in his 50's.

Dad is one of the smartest men I know.

We used to play a game where I would ask him a math question, and he would immediately figure it out in his head and tell me the answer. I would take my pad and pencil and figure it out just to make sure he wasn't getting one over on me, but he was always right.

Dad is a hard worker.

I can remember as a small child his headlights leaving our driveway at 5AM as he left for his job as the foreman of the plate department at a printing company....and seeing the same headlights many times at 10PM as he arrived home; only to do it again the next day.

Dad loves action.

We spent many a summer day on the infield of Arlington Park racetrack in suburban Chicago. Dad loved the ponies, but took the time to keep notes and study the bloodlines and recent results. He is the only man I know who has consistently made money with the ponies. Although his standard line to my mother when we came home was..."I broke about even". I also taught him how to count cards in blackjack, and he became so good at it he was booted out of his comped room at Harrah's in Las Vegas when he hit them for several thousand one night.

Dad taught me valuable lessons.

When I was 14 I had shaggy hair. The HS basketball tryouts were the next day, and he asked me if I was going to attend. I said no because they had a haircut rule on the team. He immediately dropped his paper and told me to get in his car, where we drove to the first barber shop we found and he informed the barber to give me a "crew cut". As we left the shop with me in tears he said, "Now you don't have any reason not to try out." As many know I went on to become an All State player in high school and received a full ride to play basketball at Memphis State University. I'm convinced none of it would have happened if he hadn't taken a stand that day.

Another interesting lesson was when he hired me to work in his plant in the summer I turned 16 years old. Since he was the foreman of a division, I was thinking i would receive some "cushy" job with little responsibility and flexible hours. When I arrived at work the first day, I was informed I would be working on the "shrink wrapper". It was brutal, hot work in a non air conditioned part of the factory far away from his air conditioned offices. Oh yeah....and he put me on the 4pm to 1230 am shift which negated any night life I had planned for the summer. When I asked him why he gave me such a tough job, his reply was simply, "Now you know what you don't want to do for the rest of your life".

Dad is slowing down.

As he says..."the parts are wearing out, and so am I".

So I wanted to write this for him now while he can still read it. And I hope he can feel the love and appreciation that it is written with. He taught me the life lessons of honesty, integrity, gentleness and hard work. And although it is a little tough for him to say the words "I love you, son". I know indeed the sentiment is there.

And Dad...the feeling is very, very mutual.

Shaq retires.....but with his great personality he will assuredly show up as a color analyst next season. I rank him as the 5th all time best center behind Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bill Russell, and Hakeem Alajuwon.

The Cubs Aramis Ramirez gets hit in the mouth with a ball and gets seven stitches. In the NHL, he would be sewn up without Novocaine and return to the game.....but in MLB they talk about putting him on the fifteen day DL. The guy makes 14.5 million this season...sheesh.

I attended David Akers charity dinner this week at the Cescaphe Ballroom on N. 2nd St. in Philly. He is a class act, and I hope the Eagles re-sign him. By the way...the venue is a jewel.

Jack Kevorkian died yesterday, as did James Arness. Agree with Kevorkian or not, you have to admire his resolve in pursuing what he felt was a just cause. And the stoic Arness lost both a daughter and an ex-wife to drug overdoses. The other man's grass indeed looks sometimes greener.

I've been lax with my posts...I'll try to pick up the pace. Thanks for reading.

For a guy who is incredibly smart.....why does GOP Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich constantly put his foot in his mouth?

The NFL lockout is all about the rookie salary cap and expanding the season to 18 games. It will be settled in plenty of time to start the regular season.

Speaking of football.....the Bulls/Heat NBA Eastern Conference final game 3 is tonite at 830 PM Eastern. This match up has been so rough the boys might want to consider face masks.

And I wasn't worried a bit that the world was coming to an end yesterday, because I know exactly when it will happen. It will happen the day the Chicago Cubs are due to wrap up their first World Series in over 100 years. Hell freezing over, apocalypse, Armageddon...etc, etc.

Mother's Day Message

Three years ago this day my wife Terri was critically injured in a freak auto accident in front of my home, but I'm happy to report she has now fully recovered and is doing wonderfully well.

It's kind of amazing the things that God will put you through to get you on track. Her accident was a huge eye opener for me.

So on this Mother's Day weekend I thought I would write this brief tribute to one of my heroes....my wife.

Happy Mother's Day hon....and I feel so lucky and blessed to have you here to enjoy it with us.

On September 12, 2011, I received a phone call at work from Ed Thompson, my ex-boss at my previous employer. Ed was a native New Yorker, and the first thing I said to him was that on the heels of the World Trade Center disaster it must be an incredibly sad day for all people, but especially for those who lived in NY. His response to me was...

"Yes, especially when your son is at the bottom of the rubble".

His words hit me like buckshot. I was stunned speechless. Ed and Violet Thompson are wonderful people, and now their beloved son Glenn was among the missing and presumed dead. I can't remember my exact response to him, but I knew whatever I said would be unable to give him any measure of comfort.

So below is an excerpt about Glenn that was written in the NY Times.

And to Ed and Vi Thompson; it is my sincere wish that the demise of the perpetrator of your son's death Osama Bin Laden brings you some level of closure. Glenn is in a better place and waiting for you. And I can tell you most assuredly that the cut throat terrorist that tried to take the heart out of America will burn three thousand plus times in eternity.....once for every soul the coward was responsible for taking

"My Mountain Man" Glenn Thompson loved to be outdoors. He hiked. He fished. He biked. He skied. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. And last October, on a mountain pass in the Colorado Rockies, he got down on his knees in the snow (he was wearing shorts) and asked Kai Wittmann to marry him. Mrs. Thompson, as she became when they married in April, has the altitude -- 11,820 feet -- engraved in her engagement ring. Glenn, 44, worked at Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor of 1 World Trade Center. While he enjoyed the camaraderie and the adrenaline rush of trading, Kai said, his work was really a means to an end. His dream was to retire early and move to Colorado. ''He was my mountain man,'' Kai said. ''He was a bond trader and damn good at it. But his heart and soul were outdoors.'' Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on September 21, 2001.

Chaka and Gino

Happenings.....

I was at the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, NJ this weekend for the Chaka Kahn concert and got to have my picture taken with her backstage. She is about 4'11" and is now 64 years old...but still puts on one helluva show.

Gas approaching $4 per gallon. For the equivalent of 7 gallons you can get a decent pair of walking shoes.

I met Gino Marchetti, the HOFer from the old Baltimore Colts of the late 50's/early 60's. recently. He is reviving the Gino's hamburger restaurants in the area and was cooking onion rings when I met him. Now that's the old work ethic.

The Cubs are 10-11, and we might be extending the streak to 103 years without a World Series title.

The Passing of Tiger Great Larry Finch

Just as the Rendezvous was to ribs and Graceland was to Elvis, Larry Finch was pure Memphis.

The ex-star player and former Memphis State University coach died from complications of a stroke and heart attack he suffered years earlier. But similar to his play on the court, it took a lot to take him out of this game.

Finch was an assistant coach for Dana Kirk in 1979, and I had rejoined the Tigers basketball team after a switch to football to finish what I had come there to do. Although this new regime was not interested in having a senior with limited skills take up much time on the court, I am thankful that Finch, Kirk, and assistant Lee Fowler allowed me to return and complete what I has started. Football had become my future, but basketball remained my passion.

A product of the Orange Mound section of Memphis and Melrose High School, Larry Finch rose above his meager beginnings to become a star player for the Tigers. His 29 point performance in the 1973 NCAA championship game against UCLA and Bill Walton (who shot 21-22 from the field and had 44 points) was indicative of Finch's talent and desire. He loved his city....he loved his university....and he most certainly loved the game of basketball.

Under Kirk, Finch was responsible for attracting one of the biggest recruits in the history of the school; 6'10" power forward and HS All American Keith Lee. Lee led Memphis to the Final Four in 1984, and Finch succeeded Kirk as head coach in 1986. Penny Hardaway, Elliot Perry, and David Vaughn all played for him. And he remains the winningest coach in school history with 220 victories.

We were two totally different people coming from opposite ends of the spectrum, but I spent many hours in his office offering differing opinions on the game, evaluation of players, and the kind of basketball repartee` that only two pure hoop junkies can enjoy. I'm pretty sure he had a unique respect for me trying to play division 1 football, and I know I had a tremendous respect for him and his incredible basketball legacy.

Tribute to Coach Jim Erkenbeck

JIM ERKENBECK, IRV EATMAN, CHUCK COMMISKEY

He was direct from central casting in Hollywood.

A gravel voiced, scotch drinking , chain smoking ex-marine, he could have gotten studio credentials and passed for Lee Marvin's kid brother.

Jim Erkenbeck, a football lifer who was the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator for the 2 time USFL Champion Philadelphia Stars, died Tuesday night at the age of 81.

As an "o" line coach, he was prototypical. Cut out of material that was more sandpaper than chamois, he had a outwardly gruff exterior as one might expect from a cancer surviving, Korean War veteran who chose to make his post war bones coaxing men the size of semi tractor trailers to flatten their opposition. "Wrong answer!" he would shout from his perch in the film room in a tone any DI would be proud of as he answered a players response as to why they missed an assignment, or dare let an opponent touch our QB Chuck Fusina, who he referred to as his "bread and butter".

But those who got to know him knew of the love he had for his players, and the respect he had for what the were trying to accomplish. Jim Erkenbeck was leading his troops to war on the football field, and he knew all too well what that entailed.

Erk's battalion with the Stars included Bart Oates, Irv Eatman, Chuck Commiskey, George Gilbert, Joe Conwell, Joe Happe, Bill Duggan, Mike McClearn, Ron Coder, Brad Oates, Rich Garza, and Scott Burris among others. As protective of them as a mother to her cubs, he could ream them out unmercifully, but it was his domain and responsibility to do so, no one else's. And everybody affiliated with the team knew it.

His coaching tour of duty had NFL stops in New Orleans, Dallas, Los Angeles, Kansas City and Oakland. But when I asked him several years ago whom his favorite team was, his response was as pointed and direct as if he was obeying a direct order. "The Stars, Dunes" (my nickname with the team) he said, "and it isn't even close"

So I salute my fallen commander one last time, and thank him for helping me become a champion. If I had twenty-one guns I'd fire them all in a final successive show of respect. And blow taps on a mournful bugle at sunset.

I'm sure Lee Marvin would have expected a similar send off.

Odds and Ends

Ok, enough of Charlie Sheen. It's human nature to take a peek at a train wreck, but when you actually see the carnage, it's time to look away. We've reached that point here.

Villanova hoops is going through a rough stretch, but I've been to their practices and Jay Wright is a top-notch coach and a tireless worker. More importantly, he has an excellent graduation rate and teaches his players far more than basketball. He will eventually turn things around.

Call me crazy, but I have a feeling new Cubs manager Mike Quade is the guy that will turn 102 years of frustration on it's ear and end the drought. Maybe not this year, but soon. Go Cubs Go....

And goodbye to actor Carl Betz, who played hubby Alex in the old Donna Reed show.

THE REAL CRIME IS SILENCE

In 1978, I decided against all odds to try and play major college football. My only football experience to that point had been some Pop Warner league. No high school, no semi-pro, just the belief that I could do it.

The football coach at Memphis State (now the University of Memphis) at that time was Richard Williamson, a tough buzzard and former disciple of Alabama’s legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. I was involved in a spring scrimmage when I caught a pass over the middle, and our hard hitting free safety Tony Graves gave me an all star shot to my exposed ribs. The pain was immediate and intense. I knew something was terribly wrong.

Back on the sideline, Williamson decided to “toughen” up this sissy basketball player and demanded that I go back in the game. When I declined saying that I couldn’t breathe, he became irate and actually took a swing at me. I didn’t sue….I ducked. When the report came in the next day that I had a fractured rib, there was no apology forthcoming from Williamson. Back then, that was the lay of the athletic land.

We can fast forward to the Holy Family basketball situation and see that it is an entirely new day. Practices are on video, and much like the Watergate tapes, they can expose any acts of overzealousness. First year Coach John O’Connor was guilty of doing something coaches have been doing for years, using physical tactics to make their squad more competitive. What he did was wrong, but this was not the real crime.

Born and raised a catholic, it pains me to see what has happened in my religion. Scores of Priests have been accused and found guilty of what I believe is the ultimate betrayal, using their collar as an EZ-Pass to sexually molest our young people. The crime itself is bad enough, but the silence and the cover-ups by the leaders of the church are unconscionable.

Athletic Director Sandy Michael, and school President Francesca Onley chose to sit on this volatile situation, with the hope that it would go away. When the parents of the player involved (Matt Kravcuk) came to the school and demanded answers, the only one forthcoming was that it as “being handled”. It took a leaked tape to suspend John O’Connor, which ultimately led to his resignation on Thursday after an embarrassing segment between player, coach, and legal counsel on “Good Morning America”.

I would hope that the local media would hold Michael and Onley’s feet to the fire and demand answers to their inactions and silence. By now, the Roman Catholics should have learned….. pretending a situation doesn’t exist is never the right answer.

The recent sexual allegations against several of the clergy in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia are an abomination. In 1984 the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL had a locker room adjacent to the visiting teams facility for Phillies opponants. Former Penn State All American and Stars QB Chuck Fusina was from Pittsburgh, and was familiar with then Bucs manager Chuck Tanner. Knowing the frustration of being a Cubs fan (at that point the streak was ONLY a paltry 74 years without a World Series victory), Fusina got Tanner to sign a baseball for me that read: Dear Ken, You are sure to have your 1st winner. The STARS, not the Cubs. Yours truly, Chuck Tanner. Boy was he right. Chuck Tanner died this week at his home near Pittsburgh at the age of 82, and the baseball remains proudly on my mantle to this day. Thanks, Chuck.

Kudos to the Philadelphia 76'rs and Coach Doug Collins for making a complete turnaround this season. Collins wears his passion on his sleeve, and has proven once again that a basketball team can compete with anyone as long as they play relentless defense and rebound.

As the people of Egypt celebrate the ouster of President Hosni Mubarek, I wonder if there is any truth to the rumor he is being replaced by Michael Vick?

A Not So Super Monday

Let's be frank.....the Jerry Jones tribute to Jerry Jones that masqueraded as Super Bowl 45 was an unmitigated disaster. Let me count the ways:

The weather outside ws frightful. As late as Friday people were still having trouble getting into snow swept Dallas. Ice was falling from the stadium injuring workers. A real mess.

Prior to the game, many of the patrons who had braved the next to impossible travel obstacles got to the game only to be turned away from their seats by the fire marshal who deemed them unsafe. I gues having only two years doesn't give you enough time to inspect these things.

Christina Aguilera fumbled the words to the national anthem, and then tried to make up for it by showing off her riffs and range. It's the national anthem...not a record demo. She was badly outshined by Lea Michelle of Glee who performed America, The Beautiful flawlessly.

The game itself was a sloppy but competitive affair that at least held the viewers interest. But dropped passes, untimely penalties, and injuries to key players on both sides took a toll on the game.

The Black Eyed Peas were ok at best...but the super hyped commercials were awful. If'm I spent $100,000 per second on an ad, I'm having my lawyer draw up papers against the ad agencies this morning.

Highlight of the day.....watching Cameron Diaz hand feed Alex Rodriguez some pre-game popcorn. I'm not one prone to jealosy....but.

Hope you got your fill. Don't be surprised if a work stoppage interferes with the start of the 2012 season.

Gritty

I saw the remake of True Grit this weekend by the Coen brothers with a helping hand by Executive Producer Steven Spielberg.

Jeff Bridges gives a remarkable rendition of Rooster Cogburn...he was born to play the part. My only criticism is that he could have been mistaken for "Bad" Blake in Crazy Heart. Different eras, but similar characters. John Wayne? not quite...but not too shabby.

Matt Damon accounted for Glen Campbell as Texas Ranger Laboeuf, but it was an odd assignment. Hardly on screen, he did little to distinguish himself in this film.

And speaking of scant face time, big name actor Josh Brolin took over as villain Tom Chaney but doesn't appear at all in the film until the last several scenes. Must be nice to have a budget to afford an actor like Brolin for so few minutes.

Barry Pepper (61, Saving Private Ryan), is one of my favorite actors and replaced for Robert Duvall as Lucky Ned Pepper. Again, such a waste for an actor so talented to play such a small role. However, his lines always pack a powerful hail of buckshot.

The star of the show is Hailee Steinfeld who plays Mattie Ross, and showed such incredible presence on camera it was hard to believe she was only 14. A far, far better performance than Kim Darby, who wasn't all that bad in the old version.

Some scene changes and twists kept it interesting, but some of the dialogue was repeated word for word from the original. Still in all, I'd recommend it and give it a solid 3 out of 4 stars.

The Cutler Controversy

There is no reason to believe Jay Cutler wasn't hurt.

No one knows their body like the guy in the skin. After going through off season conditioning, sweltering in training camp, and playing 99% of the plays this season and enduring 52 sacks, do you really think a guy would slink off to the sidelines in the biggest game of the year? Hardly...no competitor would do that.

But Jay Cutler is also his own worst enemy.

Instead of being an active participant on the sideline, he stood there like Batman in his cape with that smirk frozen on his face like his nemisis The Joker. No cheering--just smirking. No advising--more smirking. No coaching--just stoic smirking. Football fans are passionate, and they expect the same from their heroes.

Cool was good for George Gervin, not for Jay Cutler. If you are going to criticize the guy--leave the knee alone and go after the smirk.

It's a much bigger target.

Now let me get this straight.....

In his 2010 post mortem when the Birds were roped, tied, and branded by the Cowboys, Andy Reid announced to the world that Donovan McNabb would be the Eagles starting QB in 2011. He then traded McNabb in April to the Washington Redskins.

This year at his now ritualistic "early to exit, this team has promise, wait til next year ala the Chicago Cubs" press conference, Reid lauded defensive co-ordinator Sean McDermott and said he would return for 2012. So Big Red promptly went on a much needed and quite convenient vacation, and had the team announce that both McDermott and Defensive Line Coach Rory Segrest had been fired.

Here's the thing about credibility Andy.....you only get so much of it.

10 Reasons Why It Is 50 Years And Counting....

The battle is lost, and the war is again over.

We wave our flag of Eagle surrender for the 50th consecutive year. Here are 10 reasons why the Lombardi trophy will be paraded down a thoroughfare other than Broad Street in 2011.

1. We let a team ranked near the bottom of the NFL in rushing gain over 100 yards on the ground using their 3rd string running back.

2. Marty Mornhinweg gave up on Shady McCoy and the Eagles ground game far too soon.

3. Eagle's defense could not get heat on Aaron Rodgers without blitzing and exposed an undermanned secondary.

4. David Akers mysteriously turned into Scott Norwood.

5. Normally sure handed Jason Avant and mercurial DeShawn Jackson dropped crucial passes.

6. Eagles offensive line could not protect Michael Vick. Any other QB might have gotten killed.

7. Does Andy Reid need to burn a timeout from the one yard line when you are down by 11 near the end of the game and then call a quarterback sneak?

8. Too many penalties....especially on the offensive line.

9. Sav Rocca turned into lightfoot Louie.

10. Too many injures.

In the end--it was a valiant effort by the Birds in a year when really no one expected them to compete. In the coming weeks and months, we will hear the spin about the draft and how the team is preparing to make 2012 their year.

My request to Lurie, Banner and Reid is to take a no. 2 lead pencil and work on correcting this list. It's the least we can expect from the gold standard....isn't it?

It’s time for a little honest communication about Michael Vick.

First of all, if you think the reclamation project in re-signing Vick was to lend a helping hand to the downtrodden, I’ve got a used car in my driveway I’d like to sell you. The Eagles three wise men of Lurie, Banner, and Reid saw the writing on the wall regarding Donovan McNabb and had no intention of giving him another mega-bucks deal, so they signed Vick as a way to make McNabb take less money in a new contract or as a potential replacement in case they decided to move him. Say what you want about the Birds brain trust, but they are very smart businessmen.

In the latest version of political bandwagon jumping, President Barack Obama calls Jeff Lurie and praises him for giving Vick a second chance. I was just wondering if Michael had not taken the league by storm with his miraculous season and headlining play and continued as a back up to Kevin Kolb (which as you recall WAS the plan) if our Commander in Chief would have taken the time to reach out to Lurie with his congratulations. My guess is an emphatic no. This was probably just another case of a person in the public eye trying to ride the hot horse.

Along the same lines---let’s take a look at MSNBC’s nimrod of the week, conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson. (Please keep in mind there are many at this Fox wannabe cable news network that vie for this title; Keith Olbermann usually leads the list.) The floppy haired and bow tied Carlson goes on the air and suggests that a proper punishment for Michael Vick to atone for his past doggy dilemma would be his execution!

Now I’m a devout dog lover. My half hound/ half yellow lab Duke lies faithfully by my side every night as I’m reading a book or watching the tube. But to suggest capital punishment for the crime Vick committed is a shameless stab at creating a stir to get your name atop the Yahoo search engine. It’s all about nonsense…and trying to cash in on the buzz regarding the Eagles QB.

This week Michael Vick will be resting his quad and watching his team play a meaningless JV game against whatever players on the Cowboys Jerry Jones chooses to risk to injury. And the Michael Vick hubbub will subside…until he beats the Green Bay Packers in round one of the playoffs. And then the 24 hour news machine will kick in once more.

Just don’t be surprised if Barbara Boxer and Bill O’Reilly have a very strong opinion on the subject the day after the game.

MEA CULPA

Mea Culpa is a Latin term meaning a formal apology or acknowledgement of guilt. It’s a fancy way of saying I was wrong.

Several weeks ago, when the NFL season was in it’s infancy, I took a look at the Philadelphia Eagles roster and schedule and boldly predicted the Birds could do no better than a 9-7 record this year. Now they sit on top of the NFC East with a record of 10-4 and look like one of the dominant teams in the league. Where exactly did I go astray?

Michael Vick - How was I to know this graduate of Leavenworth would not only atone for his canine atrocities but become Randall Cunningham on speed skates? Never known as a pocket passer, the rambling wreck from Virginia Tech has completely changed his game. I hear he is in the NovaCare complex early and is one of the last ones to leave. Good for him -mea culpa for me.

Shady McCoy- Who would have thought that this second year RB from Pitt could make us forget about Brian West….who? Mea culpa.

Injuries- You mean the Eagles could lose Leonard Weaver and Jamaal Jackson in the first game, and at times go without Stewart Bradley, Ellis Hobbs, Nate Allen, Brandon Graham, Winston Justice, Todd Herremans, and DeShawn Jackson and still win? Mea culpa.

DeShawn Jackson- The showboating has got to go, or some over zealous DB is going to remove his head and use it as a volleyball. But this guy has turned into the most electrifying Eagle’s player since…wait a minute, he is the most electrifying Eagle’s player I’ve ever seen. Sorry Wilbert. Mea Culpa.

Andy Reid – Ok, so Big Red isn’t very good at getting challenges right, and a crucial time out may escape him here or there. His team gets way too many unnecessary penalties, and he likes to go for a field goal occasionally when only a touchdown will do. Despite all this, he gets his team ready to compete almost every week. Mea culpa.

Add in Marty Mornhinweg unexpectingly turning into Don Coryell, Tom Coughlin unexplainiedly turning into Walt Michaels, and Tony Romo taking ¾ of the season off…can you at least see my point? On second thought forget it. Mea culpa…mea culpa…mea culpa.

BLUE

I got a cold slap in the face yesterday, and it reminded me of one very important lesson. Nothing says life has to be fair.

My most vivid memory of Ron Santo will always be of him clicking his heels as he headed towards the home clubhouse entrance in Wrigley Field (which in those days was down the left field line) after a Cubs victory in 1969. Although he won 5 gold gloves, was a nine time all star, and hit 342 home runs, it was the joy of a win that drove him to that memorable dance, and propelled him into the hearts of countless Cubby fans.

He played a bit after Eddie Matthews, and a tad before Mike Schmidt. Only Brooks Robinson was held in the same esteem as Santo in that era. In his time he was considered the prototypical third baseman, and he did it while battling diabetes for most of his adult life. But he never complained, he just gave himself a shot of insulin before every game…. and then played his heart out.

The diabetes probably cut his career short, and then the disease ultimately took both of his legs. But it never for one second dampened his enthusiasm for the boys from the North Side. He was an unabashed homer as the Cubs radio color analyst, there was no way he could be impartial when it came to his team. His moans and groans as the Cubs endured another loss on their way to 101 years of futility echoed what we all felt. Ron Santo went from being an all-star third baseman to being one of us. And that’s why Cub fans around the world are crying tears of blue today.

In a perfect world, he would have been enshrined in Cooperstown years ago, and the Chicago Cubs would have broken their century long streak of hard luck and won a World Series in time for him to enjoy it. But as I said, life isn’t always fair. However, I am taking solace today in the fact that I’m sure Ron Santo is clicking his new heels and flapping his wings as he heads to that big clubhouse entrance in the sky. And that effervescent smile is there once again.
You see…he finally is getting the ultimate reward that he really deserved.

Hurry up Ronnie, Jack Brickhouse and Leo Durocher are waiting for you.

Comments on yesterday's Eagles 31-27 loss to the Bears at Soldier Field:

It was never more clear that the Bears employed an "old school" mentality and beat the Eagles using the following principles;

If you get heat on the opposing QB without blitzing, you can disrupt an explosive offense without sacrificing coverage.

Running the football and stopping the run are still the best two methods of controlling game tempo ... and they always will be.

Questions...

Why weren't the Eagles able to maintain their footing on the natural grass? Didn't they test their spikes in pregame? And if they weren't the right length...why didn't they change them?

Did Sean McDermott know that the Birds secondary could be exposed so badly by a usually erratic Jay Cutler simply by the absence of Asante Samuel?

How in the world can Andy Reid justify kicking a FG with 5 minutes left in the game down by fifteen? His post game explanation was, "I wanted to come out of there with points" is ridiculous. If you lose by 5, 15, or 50, a loss is a loss. Going for a TD there was the only option.

On another note....surely we will miss actor Leslie Neilson. But I didn't mean to call him Shirley.

Here are a few key words as well as some thoughts that are simple and practical to apply; something you can use right away in your quest for becoming more thankful:

Time. Set aside time regularly to be quiet, to reflect. We live in the fastest-paced time ever. From the moment we awake to the moment we collapse into bed, we have the opportunity to go at full speed and never slow down. If we schedule time every day in which we can be quiet and reflect, we will free our hearts and minds up from the tyranny of the urgent and rushed.

Thought. Give thought to the many blessings that you have. Living in a consumer culture, most of us are fully aware of what we do not have and how we absolutely must have “it.” But how often do we reflect upon that which we already have? Take some time each day and think of one or two things that you have that you may typically take for granted and then take a moment and give thanks for those. In fact, I make it a part of my reflection time to review a list of things that I’m thankful for.

Generosity. Be generous toward those with less and not envious of those with more. We tend to look at others who may be wealthier than ourselves and think, “I sure wish I had what he does.” That kind of thinking breeds envy and jealousy rather than contentment. What can we do to break that cycle? I would suggest being generous to those who are less fortunate than yourself. Go to work at a food bank. And not just during the holidays—everybody works there then—but on a regular basis during the year. That will remind you of how good you really have it.

Ask. Ask a friend what they are thankful for. The next time you are at lunch with a friend, ask him or her what they are most thankful for. You will be amazed at the answers you receive, and you will create a meaningful bond with your friends as you focus on this powerful question.

Acknowledge. Lastly, tell those you love how thankful you are for having them in your life. So many times we neglect to take the time to craft the words to express to those closest to us what their presence in our lives means to us. Take the opportunity of Thanksgiving Day to write them a note or sometime during the day put your hand on their shoulder, look them in the eyes and tell them. Let them know what they mean to you, and in return you’ll begin to create the possibility of deeper, richer, more fulfilling relationships with those you love.

V is for Vick-tory

There were a series of explosions on a battlefield outside of Washington DC a couple of nights ago that began at approximately 8:45 PM. The persons responsible were not wearing fatigues, but did have on combat boots that were spewing sparks. And word has it one had a missile launcher attached to his left appendage just under the elbow. The Philadelphia Eagles have obviously stockpiled the weapons of mass destruction that were never found in Iraq.

The targets in this vicious attack were a band of over aged and under motivated terrorists masquerading as an NFL football team. They tried to intimidate our troops before the battle had officially begun, and were spitting mad by the time they offered their meek surrender at the end.

Our Field General recently came out of retirement after a short stint in the brig for conduct unbecoming of an officer. As heinous as his acts were, the brass at the Pentagon located at Broad and Pattison will likely expunge his record and reward him with a hefty pension as long as he keeps his nose clean and continues to mop up the enemy with his blue flame thrower and uncanny maneuverability.

Dare we think our army can conquer the football world? Certainly the city would hold a ticker tape parade and accord them with full military honors if they did. Ask the Washington Redskins (who were aptly named for this game because of the bombs blasting all around them) who the favorites are to offer their constituents and followers a truce after fifty years of war with no significant victory.

This may well be the year that ends the football bloodshed here in Philadelphia.

A Golden Retriever of a Lost Program

Not since the days of Wayne Hardin and Bruce Arians has there been flicker of interest in Temple football.

Jerry Berndt was a good man and had success at Penn, Ron Dickerson had the pedigree as a player and coached at Penn State, and Bobby Wallace was legendary as a D2 coach and won 3 consecutive national championships. But even with all this history on their side, none of these leaders could get the Owls over the top.

Enter, Al Golden.

This dashingly handsome generator of raw energy and enthusiasm has done what many local pundits said was impossible, and that is to put Temple football back on the national stage. Ok, Ok, it is the Mid American Conference, and no one is going to confuse Eastern Michigan with Oklahoma. But it’s not the stage they are playing on here that matters, it’s Director Golden and his cast of adolescent actors that are awakening the audience and have them shouting “encore’ after just about every game.

I did color commentary for Temple football television in the mid 80’s with Harry Donahue, and I never quite understood why a university in a major market like Philadelphia that played their games in a big time venue (then Veteran’s Stadium, now Lincoln Financial Field) struggled in numbers, both in the seats and the win column. But that is history now --- at least the wins are no longer a problem. The 2010 version of Golden’s baby birds are now 8-2 and headed for another bowl game.

Al Golden is blazing a trail that will end up a with a pot o’gold at the end of the rainbow, both for himself and for the Temple Owls. He may be the perfect choice as a successor for his aging but legendary mentor Joe Paterno at Penn State. But never fear Owl fans…for he has proven that it can be done on North Broad. And if you can make it there, you can make it just about anywhere.

Doug Collins cares…..have you seen the way he looks only 3 games into this NBA season? His passion for the 76’rs is etched on his face. But the bangs and the dimples of the early 70’s have been replaced by the lines of age and damaged by the effect of migraines. Our beloved prodigal son is looking kind of old these days.

He signed on to coach a team with a point guard who can’t shoot, a prize draft pick that can’t score, a swing player that can’t find his niche, a power forward that is past his prime, and no center. Tell me again Doug, does the microphone look a little better to you now? I’ll bet it does.

The money is always a temptation, and the competitive fires will always beckon those who thrive on it and are steeped in it. But this team really has little or no chance to compete, and Collins deserves better than this.

So I call on President Rod Thorn and GM Ed Stefanski to mortgage the future and get us a top tier player who can score, and an athletic center that can defend and rebound. You won’t win the NBA title anytime soon, but you might be saving a life.

Do it for Doug Collins….before it’s too late.

So you sit down last Sunday afternoon with your suicide wings and an ice cold brew ready to root the Birds on to victory. The game starts well, and the Eagles are ready to blow out Tennessee in the first half. Incredibly, the game takes a 180 degree turn and the Titans go on to a 37 – 19 victory, and all you got out of the last 3 hours is a scalding tongue, indigestion, and a loss check mark next to your office pool sheet. Let me help to explain why the 2010 Philadelphia Eagles will not be better than 9-7 this season:

COACHING

Andy Reid is a good person and an above average administrator. However, he continually displays the characteristics of a coach that is over his head regarding many facets of the game. Cases in point:

Time management- Was there ever a worse display of a hurry up offense that the Eagles displayed in the 2004 Super Bowl? My daughter Taylor who was 14 years of age at the time kept calling me during the 2 minute drill at the end of the game while I was in Las Vegas saying, “Why aren’t the Eagles hurrying Daddy?” I didn’t have an answer for her. Also, a time out saved can be a game saver, and the Birds blow far too many week after week.
Inability to adjust during the game- Why do you think offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg took over the play calling responsibilities? I’m told by insiders that one of the reasons is that Reid would not vary from his scripted plays, regardless of a defensive alignment that the team was not prepared for.
And who is taking responsibility for letting Kenny Britt of the Titans break a receiving record with 225 yards and 3 TD’s in 3 quarters of play?? At what point do you blanket him and let the other WR’s beat you?
Penalties- The Eagles are one of the most penalized teams in the league, and that is a product of lack of discipline that reflects on the man in charge.

TALENT

The 2010 Philadelphia Eagles have above average talent, but are dreadfully thin at some important positions that will be difficult to overcome. Losing stalwarts like Leonard Weaver and Jamaal Jackson for the year so early in the season is tough to overcome. Yet there are other positions that have glaring weaknesses that are costing the Birds.

Cornerback- Ellis Hobbs is a small corner that gets exposed by big receivers like Britt. Asante Samuel is a great anticipator of the ball, but is a poor tackler and only an average cover guy. Safeties’ Nate Allen and Quinten Mickell are fine.
Tight End- Brent Celek is missing key blocks and not catching the ball as well as he did last season.
Linebackers- Ernie Sims is an athlete but undisciplined. Stewart Bradley is a gamer but his knee injury gives him trouble in covering fast tight ends.

SCHEDULE

Rest of the way- Although they have gotten a break with the Romo injury and the Bears collapse, its going to be difficult to come out of the remaining games (Indy, Washington, NYG, Chicago, Houston, Dallas twice, and Minnesota) any better than 4-4, which would put them at 9-7 for the season. Given that fact that the NFC is dreadfully inconsistent this season, don’t throw in the towel yet. Just keep it next to the chair close to the hot wings, you may need it to wipe your hands and dry your tears.

Not much brotherly love here this weekend....

The Birds fell flat in the second half and fell to the Titans 37-19. Andy Reid is a fan of stating the obvious....that it all starts with him. Well in this case he's right. A season high 10 penalties and an inability to make adjustments during the game (Kenny Britt 7 catched 225 yards and 3 TD's) is an indictment of the coach.

If a 70 degree day walk in late October against a backdrop of dazzling burnt orange trees doesn't get you in a great mood, not much else will.

The Phillies phailed and phloundered against the SF Giants in six games. An inability to get a timely hit, play sound defense, and move baserunners overcame their "once in a lifetime" pitching staph and proved to be their downphall. But don't phret...with the exception of soon to be phree agent Jayson Werth the team will pherociously phire at them again next season.

Phillies are alive...and they probably won't face Linsecum again in the series. Although they are not playing their best baseball, this team continues to battle until the end.

I keep my XM radio station tuned to the 70's channel.

I think Andy Reid does it with mirrors, but the Eagles have a decent chance of being 5-2 after this week's game against the Titans. But Tennessee Head Coach Jeff Fischer is the most underrated in his profession.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

I saw "Wild Thing" Mitch Williams fist bumping fans at Citizen's Bank Park the other day. Unfortunately, his first four attempts he missed low and inside.

Phillies fall to Giants 3-0 in Game 3. I would pitch Halladay in Game 4 if he is ready and able, then take my chances with Blanton in Game 5. You don't want to go down 3-1 in this series.

I was in the 10 items and under express lane at the grocery store the other day behind a woman that must have had 30 items in her cart...GRRRRR.

It has been 25 years since I put on a uniform and played professional football, but because of my association with the Philadelphia Eagles I am afforded the opportunity to be on the field for some games. The players are bigger and faster these days, and the collisions are beyond belief. The problem here is that football is a violent game, and player decisions are made in the blink of an eye. I don't believe you can legislate the game to be less violent. Sometimes there are inherent risks with anything you decide to do.

Speaking of concussions, Sixers Head Coach Doug Collins missed yesterday's preseason game with a recurring headache he's had since suffering a fall around Memorial Day. If he thinks he has a headache now, wait until he tries to coach this team in an 82 game NBA season with no legitimate big man and mediocre talent. Pass the Excedrin!

Actor Tom Bosley died yesterday at the age of 83. Goodbye Mr C, thanks for all the Happy Days you gave us in the 70's.

Kevin Kolb plays his butt off Sunday against the Falcons, and its the very reason why Andy Reid should not have painted himself into a corner by announcing Michael Vick as the starter for the rest of the season a few weeks back.

Speaking of Michael Vick, I know of no coach in the world who would condone a player who has a PRAYER of playing in the game to show up 45 minutes before kickoff time. And any player worth his salt WANTS to be there early. Character shows up at the most interesting of times.

Running back Shady McCoy continues to impress with his moves, quickness, and cutback ability.

Offensive Co-ordinator Marty Mornhinweg outcoached the bejesus out of the Atlanta defensive coaching staff.

Phillies note: Did anyone find it interesting that Ryan Howard was goofing around at the Birds game with Fox's Tony Siragusa a few hours before the NCLS game against the Giants? Had he gone 0-5 in a Phillies loss, you would have heard the media and the fans howling!

Halladay and Linsecomb...what a match-up! Biggest influence in the game was the inconsistent strike zone of home plate umpire Derryl Cousins. I stilll look for the Phils to win this in 6 games.

A source close to the Penn State football program has told me this will be Joe Paterno's last season. "Joe Pa" has been a class act and has run the most honest and one of the most successful NCAA football programs forever, and I sincerely hope he goes out with a few more big wins.

Two of my all time favorite movie directors are Ron Howard and Clint Eastwood. They almost never fail to entertain.

A sad farewell to America's mom Barbara Billingsley of Leave It To Beaver who passed away yesterday at the age of 94.

Dined at the Iron Hill Brewery in Maple Shade, NJ last night. The mussels with leeks and bleu cheese are to die for. And the rock shrimp pizza with a cherry wheat beer chaser were excellent.

My seventh month old half lab/half hound dog puppy Duke is a handful, but all he wants to do is play and give unconditional love. I could probably learn something from that.

Eagle aftermath versus 49rs...

Kevin Kolb can play......he showed a strong arm, good decision making, and ample mobility.

RB Shady McCoy is a warrior. If you've ever had a cracked rib ( I have ), you know what I'm talking about.

Defense is still a huge question mark, although linebacker Moises Fokou fumble causing hit on Frank Gore was a game changer. (If Frank Gore injures his shin during a game...is it considered a Frank Gorshin?) Those younger than 50 will probably have no idea what that joke means.

Phillies note: Sweep the Reds behind a masterful performance by Cole Hamels. This edition of the Phiting Phils might be the best professional team in Philadelphia history. And it certainly is one of the most dominating baseball teams I've ever seen.

Phillies ace Roy Halladay turns the baseball world on it's ear by pitching only the second no hitter in postseason history, and then humbly eschews the national media the next day by quietly resuming his normal routine. Heroic stuff from this sports hero when most athletes do anything they can to get on Sportscenter so they can have a cereal named after them....don't you think?

Florence Henderson may be 76, but she looks and dances like someone 30 years younger.

Why can't the Twins beat the Yankees EVER? I just don't get it.

If you have kids in college, does anyone else out there think the federal grant and student loan process is as confusing as I do? Try doing it for triplets sometime...sheesh.

My new Toyota RAV4 has a "smart key". Just keep it in your pocket and the car senses the key is near. You can then open the doors and start the car without ever taking it out. AMAZING technology.

Blue cheese stuffed olives in a vodka martini.....highly recommended.

Kudo's to the National Football League for their show of solidarity and support in having the players wear pink chin straps and wristbands signifying the fight against breast cancer and recognizing the Susan G Komen Foundation last weekend. A most worthy cause.

Want a great grilling steak marinade? Take a cup of soy sauce and add some minced ginger, garlic, and lemon zest. Let steaks marinade for at least four hours and grill 6-8 minutes on east side.

Baseball playoffs begin today. Don't think anyone can stop the H2O attack of Phillies pitchers Halladay, Hamels, and Oswalt...but thats why they play the games.

Watch out for the Cubs next year. They won't have much of a team but NO ONE can lose 103 years n a row...can they?

So Donovan returns and gets to prance around the Linc with a win wearing a maroon sweater. Pathetic #'s ( 8 for 19 125 yards and 1 interception ) and then has the audacity to stand up in front of the national TV cameras and state how the Eagles made a mistake by letting him go. Usually, the guys who talk about themselves NEVER win the big game.

The biggest factor in the game (and for the Eagles ) is an inconsistent defense that at times cannot stop the run, and does not get heat on the QB.

Andy Reid may be a good person and a great organizer, but he's not a quick thinker. He cost the Birds a chance at a touchdown late in the first half by getting a delay of game penalty coming out of a timeout. Regardless of the spot of the ball, with as many assistants an NFL team has on the payroll now its inexcusable to take a penalty there.

Kevin Kolb will most likely get his long overdue chance...I'm sure Michael Vick has some cracked ribs if he didn't come out of the locker room for the second half.

Donovan McNabb returns to our city to do battle against the reborn and re energized Michael Vick and the Eagles. I realize its a story...but I'm looking forward to getting past the soap opera and playing the game. I've stated this before...McNabb is a good quarterback that consistently came up small in big situations. Best of luck with the Skins.

Speaking of the Eagles.....Joe Banner might want to consider tearing up DeSean Jackson's contract and giving him a new one. He's a bona fide soon to be superstar... if he isn't one already.

A sad farewell to actor Tony Curtis who died yesterday at the age of 85. "Some Like It Hot" will forever be a movie classic, and we have lost one more link to the golden era of Hollywood.

I gave someone a copy of my book recently (An Improbable Journey http://www.kendunek.com/) and he said "Thanks, I won't waste a moment reading it". I wonder what he meant by that?

NJ Governor Christie continues to impress with his latest edict regarding proposed changes in the faltering educational system. Tough times call for bold measures...and he seems to be the right man for the job. I can just imagine what the NEA is saying this morning.

Authorities just extinguished a planned terror attack in Europe based in Pakistan. When will the world learn that these extremists will never stop....and the world will never be able to relax? The US can pull out of Iraq, but will forever have to have a strong military presence in the region.

Jennifer Gray (Dirty Dancing) is on Dancing With The Stars and is incredibly gifted. She is also a walking billboard as an advocate for rhinoplasty and looks like an entirely different person. By the way...how can Michael Bolton be such a great singer and such a terrible dancer??

McNabb returns to Philly this weekend....as the second best QB on the field.

What have they done with the Kansas City Chiefs? 3 wins and no losses??

Can we agree the Mickey Mouse timeout right before a FG should be banned? It cost the New Orleans Saints a loss yesterday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 3-0 and are now playing their 4th string QB. Something tells me Big Ben will be walking the straight and narrow path when he returns in a couple weeks.

Michael Vick has totally impressed me in every way. His throws are accurate, his escapability is unmatched, and his answers to the media are contrite. Andy Reid better get used to answering the QB controversy questions, because they are here to stay.

More concerning to me is the Eagles defense. Where was Omar Gaither when the Lions were gashing the Birds in the first half on the ground? And the last two late scores by the Lions could have cost us the game.

Did anyone else think the DeSean Jackson catch that was overruled in the first half was retribution to the Lions for the awful ruling that cost them the game against the Bears the week prior?

I've ripped Jason Peters in the past, but I admired his courage in coming back from knee and ankle injuries in the first half.

Next time Sam Rosen and Tim Ryan do an Eagle's game, remind me to switch to Merrill Reese and Mike Quick!

PS Give the premier of HBO's Boardwalk Empire an A+ for costume and set design and a B- for content. I expected more from a Martin Scorsese piece.

The Philadelphia Eagles under Andy Reid take too many penalties and are one of the poorest teams at adjusting to game situations and clock management. If they don't beat Detroit (which is not out of the question since the Lions have beefed up their defensive line), it could be a looooong season.

There is a Wall Street sequel coming out by Oliver Stone and starring Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko? Gotta see it.

Jamie Lee Curtis is now past 50 but remains one of the sexiest women in the world. Of course, having Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh as parents is a good head start.

Does the Eagles post game show on Comcast bother anybody but me? Mike Barkann and Ray Didinger are the best. But Vaughn Hebron is a waste and Ed Rendell is a joke. Rendell (who wanted to draft Ricky Williams over McNabb) now wants to pull the plug on Kevin Kolb for Michael Vick. Stick to politics Gov....as they said in the movie "Rain Man", this ain't your game.

I've always said I don't know why pro teams don't mandate a "cover up" policy when female reporters are allowed in the locker room. Putting a provocatively dressed former Miss Spain like Inez Sainz in a room with 53 naked men is a recipe for disaster.

And the Clinton Portis comments were ridiculous. What is he thinking? These guys are supposed to be PROFESSIONALS.

By the way...I hear the Lingerie Football League is looking to sign Ms. Sainz to a contract, but she can't run, throw, catch, or protect the quarterback. Maybe the Eagles might have an interest.

An autopsy has determined that Penn star football player Owen Thomas suffered from a degenerative brain disease caused by head trauma that lead to his suicide. The concussion issue is one that has been covertly neglected for years. It wouldn't surprise me if the NFL moves to have players sign medical waivers in the future regarding concussions.

Sometime common sense has to prevail. Why is it that a runner need only to "break the plane" of the end zone with possession of the ball for it to be ruled a touchdown, but a receiver must maintain control "to the ground" for a score to be upheld? Anyone that has ever played the game knows that Calvin Johnson and the Lions were robbed by the refs last weekend. But here's a lesson Calvin...since it is a rule (albeit a bad one), tuck the ball away instead of showboating and trying to get on Sportscenter.

Last night the Jets proved that they have the bark...but the Ravens have the bite.

The violent nature of modern day professional football was never more evident than the second quarter of yesterday's Eagles/Packers game when the Birds suffered four brutal injuries.

C Jamaal Jackson tears his bicep and is probably gone for the season. This is an especially tough break since he worked so hard to come back from major knee surgery this off season.

FB Leonard Weaver suffers a ghastly torn ACL and is also out for the year. He's a class act and a team leader who will be hard to replace.

QB Kevin Kolb and LB Stewart Bradley suffer concussions and do not play in the 2nd half.

If there was ever more evidence that football players put their lives and careers on the line every time they put on the pads, I haven't seen it. And since the league has benn forced to take a precautionary stance on concussion type injuries, look for an expanded practice player option with the next collective bargaining agreement that will allow teams to draw from those players in emergency situations. Why not just expand the roster you say? No way...the owners don't want to pay emergency players full salary!

Finally....albeit I'm not a Michael Vick fan because of his dog history, but I did admire his athleticism during his comeback effort in yesterday's game. What I didn't admire was his comment in the post game news conference when he said he thought the Eagles would have won the game if he had played all four quarters. That is a shameless self-promotion that threw Kevin Kolb and the rest of his team and the coaching staff under the bus. It doesn't surprise me.

Finally, at another press conference Randy Moss gets on the podium after a great Patriots win against the Bengals and announces this will probably be his last season in Ne because he doesn't feel appreciated. When are these guys going to learn that tens of millions of dollars is PLENTY of appreciation!

And yes...Andy Reid used his time outs too early.

The addition of P Roy Oswalt gives the Philadelphia Phillies three legitimate #1 starters (Halladay and Hamels). They will win the NL East and play in a third consecutive World Series.

I have to watch the Pat Tillman story that is now coming out. He was a true modern day American hero.

I see where 75 year old Jerry Lee Lewis has turned to God. Marrying your 13 year old cousin has a tendency to do that as you creep towards judgement day.

Today is cutdown day in the NFL. In no other sport do you see such big names as Matt Leinert being unceremoniously waived because his contract is not guaranteed. It's all about the cash.

I joined skype and get to video chat with my daughter Alex while she is away at college. It eases the pain.

So far there have been seven instances of children being left unattended in cars at the new Parx casino near Philadelphia Park in Bensalem, PA. And we just keep building them.....

Hurricane Earl was a big blow but all hype. Must have been a democrat.

Cole Hamels pitches a gem for the Phillies yesterday. If he wasn't such a whiner and didn't make that comment about "wishing the season would be over" while his team was in the middle of a pennant race, I would actually admire and root for the guy.

Edie Falco wins another Emmy and is one fine actress. And I guess I'm going to have to start watching Glee and Modern Family now.

NYG QB Eli Manning took a wicked shot in last night's exhibition game against the Jets that not only took off his helmet but opened a gash in his forehead that required 12 stitches. Unlike his NHL counterparts, he took the rest of the night off.

Recently watched a repeat of the movie "Milk" on HBO. Although I am not a fan of his politics (to put it mildly), you have to rank Sean Penn up there with Deniro and Pacino as one of the great actors of his time.

Ex-Eagle Brian Westbrook signs with the 49r's. Here is hoping he wears a padded helmet and stays concussion free this season.

I've tried to get into "True Blood".....but i just don't get the fascination. can anyone enlighten me?

Freedom is a wonderful thing. As a nation we fought and died for it. But absolute freedom without thought or rules is a bad idea.

Freedom of speech is important.....but you shouldn't be able to scream "FIRE" in a crowded theater and laugh at the reaction. Bad idea.

Freedom of sexual expression is important....but you shouldn't be able to fornicate on your driveway in front of the neighborhood children. Bad idea.

Freedom of religion is important.....but building a mosque at ground zero is a ridiculous proposal designed to rile the masses and cause unrest. The fact that President Obama doesn't recognize this is troubling.

Building a mosque is important....building it at ground zero is a very bad idea.

I'm back from Chicago......and no I didn't venture to Wrigley to watch the Cubs get swept by the Reds. Thanks for asking.

Read a book over the weekend titled "In My Shoes" by Randy Winton, and is recommended reading for anyone who has a son. (Even though I do not!)

Traveling this week to my hometown of Chicago.....home of the 2011 World Champion Chicago Cubs

Eagles slugging out in the heat at training camp and it pleases me in a perverse sort of a way. Too many question marks here though with a new QB, a patchwork offensive line, and a defense that was shredded by Dallas the last two weeks of the season. I see them at 8-8 or at best 9-7 this season.

Had the best sweet corn of my life from Cody's in Marengo, Illinois last night.

Congrats to my niece Alisha and her fiancee Sean who are getting married this weekend!

Bandleader Mitch Miller dies at 99 years of age. He pioneered the goatee before it was cool.

My wife Terri's Uncle Art D'Angelo will be 95 in December. He asked me how my father Jim was doing recently. He last saw him at my wedding over 28 years ago....amazing!

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is 83 and is talking about possibly extending his contract beyond the remaining two years left on it!

Chelsea Clinton's wedding over the weekend was an ultra-exclusive affair. I'm told pants suits for the mother of the bride were optional.

Pro football training camp has begun and players have begun dropping like flies, Brett Farve hasn't decided yet to play, and Albert Haynesworth was just paid a 21 million dollar bonus but can't pass his conditioning test. Sounds about right to me.

We are about to bid farewell to one of the most abrasive personalities (and voices) in the history of politics. Adios Charlie Rangel....

If you want to experience a different version of the Jersey Shore go up 195E to the GS Parkway North and check out A Pier Village in Long Branch, NJ. A stunning complex of restaurants and shops adjacent to a beautiful beach. Really nice.

And....no sign of Snooki. Although Seaside Heights is not too far away.

Is it me or is EVERY highway under construction this summer?

Ever try chinese cabbage or Bok Choy? Saute it with a little olive oil and garlic and then add a little sesame oil at the end. Incredible!

Played a great golf course yesterday in Wilkes Barre, Pa named Huntsville Country Club...rated # 5 in the state. A combination of links and trees make this a truly unique layout. Thanks to my hosts Bruce Dove and Bruce Dove Jr. for a totally enjoyable day.

Donovan McNabb actually compared himself to John Elway in his opening press conference at Redskins training camp this season. One difference #5, Elway actually won the Super Bowl. Let others talk about you....just play.

A shameless self-promotion last night by ESPN baseball analyst Bobby Valentine as he repeatedly informed the viewers of his game strategy during last night's Cubs/Cardinals game. Forget it Bobby...the job will go to either Joe Girardi or Ryne Sandberg.

Cowboy rookie Dez Bryant refused the ritualistic hazing and declined to carry Roy Williams pads after practice in training camp. Careful Dez.....the vets can make your life very difficult in that first year, and you might find yourself taped to the goalposts getting a Gatorade shower soon.

Condolences to ex-Steeler Coach Bill Cowher on the passing of his wife Kaye from melanoma. She was 54.

Regardless of your political affiliation, you've got to admire NJ Governor Chris Christie's sweeping reform of the glittering ghetto they call Atlantic City, NJ.

Since the casino industry emerged there in 1979, the casinos and boardwalk have been flanked by crime and desperation. Don't believe me? Walk two blocks off the beaten path of the casinos on the north end of town and tell me what you see.

Under this plan the state will take over the casino district there and become its own "mini-government", while taking the tax proceeds and making sure the city takes care of itself first, instead of losing the money in a bureaucratic windstorm like it has the past thirty years.

Atlantic City is broken and needs to be fixed. The advent of table games soon to be littering the Philadelphia landscape no doubt increased the urgency here. But at least Christie has the gumption to roll up his sleeves and address it.

Courage and innovation in state politics....what a refreshing change.

A Moment of Triumph

Bob Sheppard, the eloquent public address announcer of the NY Yankees and Giants, passed away yesterday at the age of 99. His pristine and mannerly voice called the names of Ruth and Jeter, Tittle and Taylor, and all those in between. What a unique and wonderful style he possessed.

Golf has been a lifetime of maddening frustration for me. Always more than proficient at any sport I tried, I excelled because of effort. Basically, I had a decent level of size and talent but tried as hard or harder than my competition. But in golf, the harder I tried the worse I did.

Interestingly, I have spent some time on the range and putting green in recent years and have found a few swing keys that work for me. I've gone from atrocious to mediocre to an acceptable level in the game. My handicap is 10, which is ok by golf standards but still far below many of my friends who have a real talent and are scratch or better.

Yesterday, during my normal weekend game, I found my rhythm. My tee shots were long and in the fairway, and my irons were crisp and on the green 16 out of 18 holes. I had four birdies that were offset only by a three putt and two poor chip shots.

I shot a 69 yesterday on the par 70 course at Burlington Country Club where I am a member. My playing partners Harold Morgan and Kevin Harper were incredibly encouraging as I attempted to achieve a hackers dream of breaking par. The three foot downhill slider I made on the 18th hole did not get me a green jacket, but it did make a few of my opponents green with envy.

You see, for one glorious afternoon, I conquered the game.....and myself.

I'm having trouble understanding how a national business like "Duck Boat" does not require passengers to wear life jackets when in the water and why the attendants didn't radio for help when they were powerless in the Delaware River. Something is fishy here.....

Don't hand the NBA title to Miami just yet because of the Lebron James and Chris Bosh signings. Basketball is a team game...and we will see how three superstars (Dwayne Wade) share the rock.

We really don't need rain....it is so hot here there is a puddle everywhere I stand.

Does it bother anyone else that people use the express cashier at the grocery store with 20 items when the sign says the limit is 10? Use the self check out you say? I would, but it always malfunctions and I have to call for help anyway!

It is SO HOT here in Philly....I heard a rumor that Hillary Clinton was in town and wore a pants suit....without the pants. How's that for a mental picture?

Got a new puppy yesterday. A 12 week old Golden Lab/Hound mix and named him Duke. Didn't want a dog, but the look on my wife Terri and daughter Jamie's face when they met him told me I made the right decision. Love is a good thing.

Tiger Woods ATT National here in Philly is giving Aronomink CC some well deserved kudos. I played 36 there last year, and it is a primo golf course.

Mortgage rates are at record lows...that's because no one can qualify for one.

Watched the first couple episodes of the repeat of the HBO mini-series John Adams last night. It is a breathtaking recreation of our country's birth. Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney as John and Abigail Adams put on performances that are worthy of an Oscar...even though its for television.

I read a quote from George Washington this morning....."Religion and morality are indispensable supports of our political prosperity". The separation of church and state DID NOT MEAN the separation of God and government. The founding fathers logic was:

To be free, you'll need a republic

To have a republic, you'll need a Constitution

To have a Constitution, you'll need morality

To have morality, you'll need religion

I get through the heat of July by remembering the 2 feet of snow I was shoveling off my driveway in February.

My most sincere condolences to fellow Eagle alum QB Randall Cunningham who suffered through every parents worst nightmare when they found his 2 year old son had drowned in the family hot tub on Tuesday. I can't even imagine.

Saw a guy in a cow suit hawking people into a Chik-Filet last week in 94 degree heat. How much do they pay these guys?

Michael Vick may have played his last down....even Andy Reid who is into giving second chances (possibly because of his sons problems) is going to have a tough time with this latest incident.

I don't like going to a barbershop or salon for a haircut....so I go to a private residence to have it done. Costs a little more, but its worth it. Besides, there is less and less to cut these days.

How can the Chicago Cubs with a $140 million payroll struggle with the Pittsburgh Pirates? It is time to clean house.

Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan came out with possibly the funniest line ever in the history of confirmation hearings yesterday when responding to Rep. Lindsay Graham's question about where she is on Christmas Day. Her response, "Like most Jews, I was probably at a Chinese restaurant." Good stuff....but she ain't no Sarah Palin.

Dow down almost 300 points again = the retirement I will never be able to afford is pushed back another year.

A dollop of black Beluga caviar on a crust of baguette with a touch of creme fraiche and red onion is a taste sensation that I will treat myself to once per year. Don't forget the ice cold Absolut martini with blue cheese stuffed olives!

Phillies bats are as hot as the temperature....

Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, PA put on a Member-Guest tournament that was second to none this past week. I played lousy in it, but still had a wonderful time with my host Don Eichman of Alcom Printing.

How are all these expensive restaurants PACKED in a recession? Couldn't get a table at the Capital Grille until 8:45 (had a gift card).

It's almost time for NFL training camp! Oh god how I miss it...

I check the cash/credit price at the gas pump and will risk running on fumes to find the best deal.

Sizzling thoughts.....

I'm not an Obama fan, but he is the President of the United States and was right to relieve General McChrystal from command for his comments.

The NEW 76's era begins tonight when they select Evan Turner from Ohio State.

Take some thick eggplant, zucchini, and white onion slices.....brush them with olive oil and dust them with garlic salt.....and then put them on the grill. Outrageously good!

Sorry for the blog lapse.....been sooooo busy.

Thanks to all who participated in the 2nd annual Leo P Roselli golf tournament this past Monday at Burlington Country Club in Mt. Holly, NJ. We had 96 golfers and raised $ for a college fund for Leo's two young boys.

It's golf week! Thoroughly enjoyed playing in Dick Vermeil's golf outing in Phoenixville, PA yesterday and reacquainting myself with old teammates Harold Carmichael, Bill Bergey, John Bunting, Scott Fitzkee, and several others. Can't quite figure out why they are getting older while I remain exactly the same!

Best summer thirst quenchers.....ice cold Corona with lime, vodka and grapefruit juice, Mike's Hard Lemonade.

Tiger Woods didn't like the greens at Pebble Beach....poor Tiger.

Nuggets.....

A Five Guys Cheeseburger with onion and jalapeno is sublime. Add the mountain of crunchy fries with it and you have a lunch that is tough to beat.

The US Open begins today......look for Phil Mickleson and Jim Furyk to contend....and don't be surprised if the ageless Tom Watson recaptures some magic at Pebble Beach.

Sat down with Eagles announcer Merrill Reese recently and interviewed him for the upcoming issue of Jersey Man magazine premiering this fall. A fascinating exchange with a Philadelphia icon.

Say what you want about Lakers Coach Phil Jackson having the best players....if he wins his eleventh NBA championship he gets my vote as the best coach in professional basketball history.

ITEMS.....

I've got a feeling the way Doc Rivers has the Celtics competing and playing defense that they will steal one in LA and become NBA Champions.

President Barack Obama's statement that he's "confident" the gulf region will be back better than it was is certainly a reach. "Hopeful" would have been a more appropriate choice of words. This situation is getting uglier by the hour and may have a permanent effect on the worlds eco-system.

I'm sure the Phillies ticked off the schedule maker when it comes to interleague play. Boston twice and at the Yankees?? Tough deal.

Finally saw Crazy Heart over the weekend on pay per view and I can now see why Jeff Bridges won the Oscar for Best Actor. His portrayal of Bad Blake (who reminded me eerily of Waylon Jennings) was a classic and is a must see for anyone who likes country music....or even if you don't.
